I have a client who is looking for a web based GIS solution.

They track ships at sea, can this handle nautical and land based maps?

I need to be able to put a ship in certain locations from the db - I assume this tool can do that correct? any examples?

Thanks

Since SharpMap is an extendable library, yes, it can do the above, provided that you have the data.

Say you have a dataset which covers the area you are interested in. The ships will report their location using lat-long or perhaps GPS, and either of these coordinates are usable on your dataset, since SharpMap can reproject the points if needed.

Render a set of points from a database with X and Y columns might help you in drawing points from a DB.
