LabelLayers w/ PostGIS - speed problem

When using LabelLayers (to display the streets names), my map is rendering to slow.

Something like 3-4 seconds with a high zoom level(few quarters). If I perform more zoom, the result is the same.

When I remove the LabelLayer layer, the map renders very fast.

I have 32k entries im my database...

How can I filter the data (on the database) to get just the names of the visible streets?
Is it possible?

Any ideia, srs?

Do you have a spatial index on the geometry columns? Filtering is already applied based on the rendering extents.

I figured out what happens...

In my situation, the performance with postgis is to slow!
Now I'm using shapefiles as datasource for my streets and their names, and I'm also using the same streets data in a PostGIS database to calculate the route between two point.

The speed is very aceptable..

keep going..
