What is the scope of SharpMap - editing or just viewing?

Hi, I'm looking for a GIS library I can use to perform transformations, programmatically, on a large shapefile.

The summary of SharpMap talks about its abilities to query and view maps, but can one also use it to edit shapefiles?

I need to do things like snap nearby endpoints together, planarize the data, and make batch modifications to attributes in the DBF; I can write the algorithms if necessary. Can SharpMap help me do such things, or would you recommend something else?

I take it SharpMap v2 is not ready for 'end-users' yet? The website isn't, anyway.

I am wondering, I have seen a lot of libraries/programs for GIS operations - PostGIS, Quantum GIS, SpatiaLite, MapWindow, SharpMap... can anyone point me to reviews or information that could help me choose between all these?
