Getting Started with GIS Programming

Hello all,

I am working on a couple of projects that will require the ability to display maps with icons representing various objects. I need to be able to support web and Windows based interfaces.

Is SharpMap ready for prime time or should I be looking at different options?

I have limited knowledge about programming GIS systems. Does anyone know of a good place to start to find out about file formats, map editing tools, sample data, etc?

Any ideas, suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rich,

It sounds like the current release quality version of SharpMap, v0.9, is just what you need. It's used in production systems all around the world, for both web and desktop.

Getting started on SharpMap is easy. There are how-tos, demo apps and the forum participation is very good.

The nice thing about SharpMap is you don't have to have a great deal of GIS domain-specific knowledge to get productive - it relies on patterns and idioms which are common in all .Net client development.
