Why don't I see coords of ShapeFile layer?

When I load a shapefile into a vector layer, I'm not seeing coords relative to the shapefile prj.

After loading, if translate clicks to locations via MapToWorld, I see coords inside what the SHP file defines as the bounding box:

Bounding box x,y min 977271, 193621
Bounding box x,y min 1010164, 25947

Yet what I need to be using is the coordinate system based on what is in the PRJ file

PROJCS["NAD_1983_StatePlane_New_York_Long_Island_FIPS_3104_Feet",
GEOGCS["GCS_North_American_1983",
DATUM["D_North_American_1983",
SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137.0,298.257222101]],
PRIMEM["Greenwich",0.0],UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]],
PROJECTION["Lambert_Conformal_Conic"],
PARAMETER["False_Easting",984250.0],
PARAMETER["False_Northing",0.0],
PARAMETER["Central_Meridian",-74.0],
PARAMETER["Standard_Parallel_1",40.66666666666666],
PARAMETER["Standard_Parallel_2",41.03333333333333],
PARAMETER["Latitude_Of_Origin",40.16666666666666],
UNIT["Foot_US",0.3048006096012192]]

Essentially, coords in in the range 40, -74.

I lost a ton of time on this.  Can someone offer me some guidance?   Thank you.

Hi Frank, is the layer in question the first layer in the map? The coordinates given from MapToWorld are in the coordinate system of the map which is taken from the first layer. hth jd

Hi John,

Yes, it was.  Also, what I later finally discovered was that the two layers I wanted to work with had different coordinate systems.  I now have a new set of shape files with the right coordinate system, and I'm back in business.

John - many thanks for the response.  Much appreciated.    - Frank
